Most vegetables go bad because of too much moisture or too little. A few small habits keep a full week's bazar fresh.
Before you put anything away
- Take vegetables out of the plastic bag from the shop.
- Do not wash them until you are ready to cook; wet leaves rot quickly.
- Throw away any damaged piece so it does not spoil the rest.
Where each vegetable likes to live
- Fridge, in a paper towel: leafy greens, coriander, green chili, beans.
- Cool, dark basket: potato, onion and garlic — but keep potato and onion apart.
- Kitchen counter: tomato, banana and pumpkin until they are ripe.
Tip: put a dry paper towel in the vegetable box of your fridge and change it every two days. It takes the extra moisture away.
Order the leafy vegetables you need for the first days, and the hardy ones (potato, onion, pumpkin) for the end of the week. With same-day delivery from your nearest branch, you can always top up in between.
